Shop for Change COO Speaks at FICCI Sustainable Textiles Forum

Jaishankar at FICCIOn 13th October 2011, Shop for Change was invited to speak at the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) conference on sustainable textiles, apparel, and garments. The event was inaugurated by S. Balaraju, Joint Textile Commissioner, Ministry of Textiles and attended by many industry leaders like Alok Industries, Pratibha Syntax Ltd, and Mandhana Industries, among others.

Jaishankar Talreja, COO of Shop for Change, spoke as on a panel called “Pillars of Sustainability”. As part of his presentation, Jaishankar discussed how partnerships with the textile industry are an integral part of Shop for Change’s mission to help India’s poor cotton farmers get a fairer deal so they can care for their families and the environment. Highlighting Shop for Change’s partnership with AND Designs, Jaishankar explained how fair trade is a win-win proposition for farmers, brands, and consumers alike. The presentation was extremely well received, and after the panel numerous participants showed significant interest in Shop for Change.

The conversation continued at Shop for Change’s stall, where Jaishankar, the Shop for Change team, and a representative from the Shop for Change certified farmer organization Chetna Organic spoke with conference delegates and discussed partnerships with brands including ColorPlus, No Nasties, and Future Group affiliated Mother Earth.   Summing up the experience, Jaishankar said, “A major take away from the conference was the curiosity that companies showed in Shop for Change and the role we can play in helping them achieving sustainability. The turnout and depth of debate shows the importance that Indian textile companies are beginning to place on sustainable business practices.”
