Spent the day with Anita – and I was impressed!

Shop for Change’s CEO Seth Petchers on his trip to Wills Lifestyle Fashion Week to see Anita Dongre’s new fair trade Spring/ Summer collection

Wow – what a moment for fair trade in India!  Today I travelled to Delhi for Anita Dongre’s show on the last day of Wills Lifestyle Fashion Week.  What was so special?  Well, to start with Anita’s entire collection was made from Shop for Change Fair Trade certified cotton fabric, made from cotton grown by the farmers at Chetna Organic that Anita, Gul Panag, and I visited a few months ago .  Second, these gorgeous garments weren’t just for show.  They’ll all be available in Anita’s stores in a few months time as her Spring/ Summer 2011 collection (see press release here).

I’ve gotten to know Anita since I met her a year ago I have to say that this is a woman who is truly impressive.  Her designs are elegant and progressive, yet grounded in tradition.  And her styles are something that real people can actually wear!  On top of this, her commitment to farmers, artisans, and the environment is deep.  In the short time that Shop for Change has been partnering with Anita, she’s upped her commitment to fair trade – first by expanding her AND Shop for Change range and now by extending her work with fair trade cotton fabric into two additional labels, GRASSROOT and Anita Dongre.  Anita’s own words about her new Spring/ Summer 2011 show her commitment best: “I have always been passionate about the cause, and by doing an entire show with Shop for Change Fair Trade cotton, I want to express my appreciation towards the farmers for their hard work.  I think fashion industry today is in an influential position where we can make a difference.”  Kudos to Anita.
